Né aveugle à Londres en 1919, George Shearing était un musicien reconnu en Angleterre avant son exil aux USA en 1947. Très vite, il rencontre Charlie Parker et les jazzmen de la 52ème Rue, notamment Bud Powell. George se produit comme piano soliste en alternance avec Thelonious Monk, puis avec Ella Fitzgerald aux "Three Deuces". Comme le Modern Jazz Quartet ou les Jazz Messengers d'Art Blakey, le trio d'Ahmad Jamal et surtout l'ochestre de Glen Miller dont il s'est inspiré pour imaginer les "voicing" du quintet. Cet ensemble à l'instrumentation inédite produit un univers sonore, une couleur nouvelle qui lui sont propres et immédiatement identifiables. Pendant cinq ans le quintet va enregistrer pour le label MGM dont l'intégralité des séances est rassemblée dans ce coffret de quatre CD.
A noter la présence de Toots Thielemans (CD 3 et 4) à la guitare comme à l'harmonica.
