"One of the darkest soundtracks we've ever heard from Andre Previn -- penned for an obscure Natalie Wood vehicle about an actress in Hollywood of the 30s! Previn's music is much more 60s sophisticated than you'd guess from the setting of the movie -- done with full orchestrations, and some occasional undercurrents of jazz -- wrapped up beautifully with a depth of feeling that really conveys the subtle emotions on the screen. Some numbers have lyrics, co-written with Dory Previn -- making the album one of her earliest collaborations with Andre -- but the instrumental numbers dominate, especially in the extended setting here. The 2CD package features 62 tracks in all -- the film score, an alternate score, the soundtrack album, and a huge amount of demos, pre-recordings, and source music.
