Le roman fut publié en 1818, après la mort de l'écrivain. Lorsque Catherine Morland, fille d'un pasteur de campagne, est invitée à séjourner dans la demeure d'une famille de la noblesse, elle est fascinée par l'architecture du bâtiment. Son imagination romantique éveille en elle des images envoûtantes faites d'intrigues et de mystères. Le roman, lu dans sa version originale, l'anglais, est une parodie des "Mystères d'Udolphe", roman d'Ann Radcliffe, paru en 1794. JMV.
