Backbone or Feedback Trombone. "Just when dem ol'bones have become tired, this new one appears. An illogical extension of the sackbutt and Harold Hills "76 trombones", the Backbone goes where no other sliding brass instrument dare treat. Developed in 1988 by owner/operator Dave Tohir and Scott Vance at the University of Redlands in smoggy Southern California, the Backbone is the closest that modern civilization has come to combining traditional John Philip Sousa brass and Jimi Hendrix distortion. Using a mixture of advanced and arcane electronics, the Backbone is incorporated into a feedback loop. Sometimes Dave controls it, and sometimes it controls him - the results are rarely predictable.
