L'heureux temps des grands orchestres se situe à l'époque où leur musique faisait danser l'Amérique et une bonne partie du monde. La « Swing Craze », cette « folie du swing », dura grosso modo de 1935 à la fin de la guerre. Cependant, l'histoire des big bands avait commencé bien plus tôt ... De l'orchestre de FLETCHER HENDERSON (1927) à celui de GIL EVANS et de QUINCY JONES, mais aussi de CAB CALLOWAY, BENNY GOODMAN, ARTIE SHAW,...., sans oublier celui de DUKE ELLINGTON.
