Avec son nouveau projet « Brewster's rooster », John Surman s'entoure de compagnons de longue date : le batteur Jack DeJohnette et le guitariste John Abercrombie à qui il associe un nouveau venu, le contrebassiste Drew Gress. Composé majoritairement de nouveaux titres de John Surman, « Brewster's rooster », compte aussi un thème de Billy Strayhorn « Chelsea bridge » ainsi que « Slanting sky » de John Warren.
