BERRY, Leon "Chu" (1910-1941) saxophone ténor. Ayant débuté en 1929, Chu Berry arrive à New York l'année suivante et joue dans plusieurs orchestres avant de faire partie de quelques-unes des plus grandes formations de l'époque : Benny Carter et Charlie Johnson (1932-33), Teddy Hill (1933-35), Fletcher Henderson (1935-37) et Cab Calloway (de 1937 à sa mort due à un accident de voiture). Son expérience de soliste de big bands ne l'empêche pas de participer à de nombreuses séances en petites formations sous la direction de Red Allen, Teddy Wilson, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton et autres. Si, comme tous les ténors, son style part de Coleman Hawkins, il développe un jeu souvent véhément, plus volubile, au vibrato serré, conduisant un discours nerveux, tendu, swinguant, constamment inspiré et équilibré avec une maîtrise parfaite de la sonorité. À côté d'Hawkins et de Lester Young, on considère Chu Berry comme le troisième très grand saxo ténor de l'avant-guerre...... [notes de pochette]. [Très bonne compilation]
