DIRTY BABY est une commande du producteur David Breskin au guitariste Nels Cline (du groupe Wilco), le même producteur qui avait commandé à Bill Frisell l'album RICHTER 858 [UF8494] en 2005.
L'album s'organise en deux parties et s'inspire, illustre de manière sonore, deux séries du peintre contemporain Ed Ruscha. La première partie (disque1) est une suite contrastée avec souci de narration illustrant l'histoire des Etats-Unis d'Amérique (arrivée des premiers colons, conquête de l'ouest etc). Le second disque reprend 33 morceaux courts (moins de 2min30 chacun) illustrant de manière autonome autant de peintures à l'abstraction linéaire-pointillés. Toutes les peintures sont reproduites dans les livrets qui accompagnent les enregistrements.
Projet très réussi dans lequel on ne rentre pas tout de suite et auquel il faut attribuer quelques écoutes. Très bon. A mettre en relation avec certains projets de John Zorn ou encore Bill Frisell.
