Première grande figure féminine et grande dame du Jazz, actrice influente de plusieurs décennies de son histoire, du blues à l'avant-garde des années 1960, Mary Lou Williams doit figurer aux côtés des plus grands noms. Figure maternelle, mentor de Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie et Thelonious Monk qu'elle a aidés et encouragés, mais également arrangeur et compositrice prolifique, Mary Lou Williams a enregistré plus d'une centaine de disques.
Concoctée par Jean Buzelin et Jean-Paul Ricard, auteur d'un livret qui retrace sa vie et sa carrière, cette anthologie couvrant trois décennies, de 1927 à 1957, présente en trois disques un échantillonnage significatif. On y retrouve ou découvre l'auteur de mélodies souvent arrangées avec audace, interprétées en solo (Night Life, Mary's Boogie, Lonely Moments, I Made You Love Paris), avec des formations variées, du trio au quartette et au quintette, ou encore à la tête de l'orchestre féminin qu'elle dirigea en 1945 et 1946, le Mary Lou Williams' Girl Stars, et, en 1957, au sein du big band de Dizzy Gillespie.
