Très jeune Dinah Washington commence à chanter dans les églises et dirigera une chorale gospel. Adolescente, après avoir remporté un concours de chant début des années 40, elle commence à chanter dans des jazz-clubs de Chicago. Elle est vite repérée par des producteurs qui la présentent auprès de jazzmen de renoms. De cette manière elle devient la voix du big band de Lionel Hampton. A partir de 1946 elle signe chez Mercury Records et publie depuis lors des disques sous son propre nom. En 7 années (entre 1948 et 1955) elle cumule plus de 20 titres dans le TOP10 des charts R&B (à partir de 1959 elle intègre les charts pop, jusqu'en 1963 année de son décès, elle est alors agée de 39 ans). Avec sa voix puissante au timbre vibrant si singulier, elle transcende alors tous les standards du jazz. Surnommée "The Queen" (la reine) elle est une des voix les plus populaire de l'histoire du jazz dans (la lignée de Billie Holiday qui sera une influence majeure).(BB)
