Ecrit par Métastase en 1727-1729, le texte est diffusé très largement au 18ème siècle. De nombreux compositeurs l'utilisèrent pour mettre en scène leur propre opéra. Notons par exemple Galuppi, Gluck, Porpora et Hasse.
En ce qui concerne Pacini, la première a lieu à Naples en 1824 et le succès est assuré en Italie. Cet opéra est joué 70 fois dans ce même Théâtre de San Carlo.
A l'âge de 28 ans, il a déjà composé 30 opéras dont "Annetta e Lucindo","La gioventu di Enrico V" et "Cesare in Egitto".
Ce qui est frappant lors de la première écoute, c'est l'importance des choeurs au sein de l'intrigue, considéré comme un personnage à part entière. MDW
