Enregistré sous son label fétiche (Nonesuch Records), Doctor Atomic permet à John Adams de déployer à la fois ses talents de compositeurs et de chef d'orchestre. C'est dire si cette version offre de cohérences. Créé en octobre 2005 à l'Opéra de San Francisco, cet opéra en 2 actes sur un livret de Peter Sellars met en scène les protagonistes du Projet Manhattan, les artisans de la bombe atomique, c'est-à-dire le scientifique Robert Oppenheimer, directeur du projet, son épouse Kitty et le General Leslie Groves commandant de l'armée américaine impliqué dans le projet. L'action a lieu dans les heures qui ont précédé l'explosion de la toute première bombe atomique dans le désert du Nouveau Mexique en juillet 1945.
Le rôle de Robert Oppenheimer est chanté par Gerald Finley qui en est le créateur. Le livret juxtapose des éléments disparates comme des interviews, des manuels techniques de physique nucléaire, des souvenirs de Peter Sellars, des documents déclassifiés, des poésies de Muriel Rukeyser, une poétesse américaine contemporaine d'Oppenheimer, des extraits de la Bhagavad Gita et des textes de Baudelaire.
