Haendel met ici en musique différents passages bibliques. Composée d'un large éventail de textes provenant de l'Ancien Testament, l'oeuvre comporte aussi des extraits de l'Exode. La composition de cet oratorio se situe entre 1737 et 1738. Réalisé pour un choeur à 8 voix, "Israël en Egypte" est une oeuvre d'envergure, brillante et théatrale à souhait. Afin de traduire divers épisodes de manière expressive, Haendel utilise tour-à-tour un orchestre de cuivres éclatants, des répétitions d'accords et d'intervalles peu usités à l'époque,....Et pourtant, cet oratorio eut peu de succès lors de la première en 1738. Le compositeur décida alors d'y apporter quelques modifications. Il s'agit ici de la version originale de l'oeuvre dirigée par Peter Dijkstra. MDW
