Oratorio à succès, Joshua a assuré à Haendel une situation financière confortable. Composé entre le 19 juillet et le 19 août 1747, cet oratorio en trois actes met en scène une des grandes figures bibliques de l'Ancien Testament. Successeur de Moïse, Josué conduit le peuple hébreu vers la Terre promise. Certains épisodes célèbres comme les fameux trombones destinés à faire s'écrouler les murs de Jéricho ou l'histoire d'amour entre le capitaine Othniel et Achsah, la fille d'un Ancien donnent l'opportunité à Haendel de faire montre de son talent musical : des choeurs brillants et jubilatoires, des airs virtuoses ou simplement émouvants, une orchestration colorées avec trompettes et timbales. Laurence Cummings à la tête du Göttingen Festival Orchestra s'est entouré de solistes parfaits: le ténor Kenneth Tarver dans le rôle de Joshua, Anna Dennis (Achsah) et la mezzo-soprano Renata Pokupic (Othniel). Les choeurs de la NDR incarnent le peuple d'Israël.
