Les années 1890 sont marquées chez Elgar par l'influence de la musique de Wagner mais aussi celle de Gounod, Schumann et Mendelssohn. Naîtront ainsi quatre oeuvres substantielles pour choeur et orchestre anticipant les grands oratorios : The Black Knight, The Light of Life, King Olaf et Caractacus. Dans toutes, Elgar utilise la technique du leitmotiv, d'une manière libre et imaginative dans King Olaf. Basées sur un poème d' Henry Longfellow, ces scènes de la saga du roi Olaf forment une cantate dramatique pour soprano, ténor et basse, choeurs et orchestre qui a la carrure d'un opéra. Duo d'amour dans King Olaf, trio et quatuor vocal dans Caractacus, passage orchestral poétique dans The Black Knight, les recettes du genre sont bien présentes. Elgar met l'accent sur le personnage de l'outsider dans ces quatre fresques : The Black Knight s'attaque au pouvoir établi, King Olaf apporte la foi en pays païen, comme si le compositeur s'était identifié à ces figures d'exception. Pièce de circonstance écrite en 1897 en l'honneur du jubilé de diamant de la reine Victoria, La bannière de Saint-George fait un complément intéressant à cet enregistrement bien mené.
