L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato est une ode pastorale composée durant l'hiver 1740 sur deux poèmes de John Milton et créée au Lincoln's Inn Fields Theater de Londres le 27 février 1740. Haendel connait à cette époque une crise créatrice puisqu'il se rend compte que les opéras qu'il compose ont de moins en moins de succès et sont de moins en moins recherchés par les théâtres. La composition de L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato allait lui apporter une diversion bienvenue et lui permettre de faire preuve de son imagination fertile. Deux caractères s'opposent : l'Homme gai et l'Homme pensif. Ce sont en réalité deux dispositions d'esprit présentes chez chaque humain et aussi fluctuantes que le temps. C'est pourquoi, ces tempéraments ne sont pas cantonnés dans un personnage unique mais ils passent successivement de la soprano au ténor puis à la basse sous forme de récitatifs et d'arias. Il Moderato tente, au final, de concilier les tendances dans un état d'esprit très propre au 18ème siècle anglais. Comme cela se faisait du temps de Haendel, deux concertos grossos et un concerto pour orgue viennent ponctuer le discours.
