Chien fou ? Le récital d'Hopkinson Smith est placé sous le signe de la liberté. Dans le répertoire pour luth de l'époque élisabéthaine, beaucoup de pièces sont restées sans titre. L'interprète a laissé libre cours à sa fantaisie et à son imaginaire en nommant quatre d'entre elles, Mad Dog est l'une d'elles. Alors ? Crime de lèse musicologie ? Plutôt l'entrée dans l'univers secret du musicien qui ressent ainsi les pièces qu'il a baptisées. Dans un climat d'intimes confidences, s'élèvent les voix de John Johnson, Anthony Holborne, John Dowland et même William Byrd dans la transcription d'époque de Francis Cutting. Du très grand art, frémissant de vie.
