A l'origine, Haydn écrit 6 opéras pour marionnettes. Seul "Philémon et Baucis" subsiste à ce jour. La création eut lieu en 1773 devant l'impératrice Marie-Thérèse. Plusieurs parties de l'oeuvre ont été modifiées, raccourcies (le prologue), éliminées (le ballet) et le final glorifie l'impératrice et les Habsbourg. Le synopsis raconte l'histoire de Jupiter et de Mercure venus sur terre pour éprouver la vertu des mortels. MDW
