Considéré comme le père de la musique savante arménienne, Komitas Vardapet, de son nom de baptème Soghomon Gevorgi Soghomonian (1869-1935) fut un prêtre et chantre arménien qui entreprit à l'instar de Bartok et Kodaly pour la Hongrie un remarquable travail d'ethnomusicologie du folklore sonore arménien. Ses pérégrinations lui permirent de recueillir quelques mille deux cents chants dont il s'inspira dans ses propres compositions, leur ajoutant une harmonie, des développements et des éléments de polyphonie. Son catalogue compte des mélodies et des pièces pour piano, souvent des danses dont le titre mentionne la région ou la ville dont provient le substrat initial.
Le pianiste Mikael Ayrapetyan, rejoint par le violoniste Vladimir Sergeev, a puisé dans ce fond pour concocter cet enregistrement procurant un plaisir d'écoute immédiat.
