Né aux alentours de 1575, Thomas Weelkes publie son premier volume de madrigaux en 1597 bientôt suivi par deux autres volumes contenant les plus belles pages du genre en Angleterre à cette époque. Organiste à la cathédrale de Chichester, Weelkes composa une important répertoire de musique sacrée comprenant des services, des anthems, des motets et des madrigaux sacrés dans un style contrapontique faisant appel çà et là à des archaïsmes. Benjamin Nicholas et le Tewkesbury choir sont allés à la découverte de ce pan non négligeable de l'oeuvre de ce compositeur anglais.
