Solomon est aujourd'hui considéré par les interprètes et les mélomanes comme un des sommets du catalogue de Handel. Pourtant, il n'en fut pas toujours ainsi. Fait rare dans la carrière britannique du compositeur, aucune représentation de Solomon n'est donnée de son vivant en dehors de Londres. Succès plus que mitigé, donc. Mais pour quelles raisons, alors que la formule des oratorios chantés en anglais rencontrait jusque là le plus grand succès ? Le manque évident de théâtralité du livret ? Un brin de lassitude du public ? Est-ce donc la crainte de ne plus être surpris ? Ou la peur de se mettre à dos les représentants de l'Église, vu les bruits qui courent de répliques érotiques à peine voilées dans les premier et troisième acte ? Avec ses chanteurs et instrumentistes, Leonardo García Alarcón nous offre ici une version flamboyante qui aurait certainement conquis les plus hésitants des auditeurs Londoniens de 1749 !
