Un cultivateur nommé Williamson disparaît sans laisser de trace en traversant un champ, au vu et au su de tous, sa famille, ses voisins et ses esclaves. Nous sommes en 1854 près de Selma dans l'Alabama. Chacun commente l'événement avec son angle de vue et les hypothèses vont bon train. Basé sur une histoire d'Ambrose Bierce, The difficulty of crossing a field est une collaboration entre le compositeur David Lang et le dramaturge Mac Wellman commandité par Carey Perloff et l'American Conservatory Theater de San Francisco. Entre opéra et théâtre musical, l'oeuvre mélange airs et textes parlés, mélodies émouvantes et passages dramatiques. Elle est écrite pour 5 solistes principaux, choeur et quatuor à cordes.
