L'avant-dernier oratorio de Haendel, Theodora, marque un tournant dans le choix des sujets : les histoires bibliques font ici place à un récit traitant de la répression du christianisme dans les premiers siècles de notre ère.

L'action se déroule à Antioche, en 304, sous l'Empereur romain Dioclétien. Valens, le gouverneur de la ville impose à son peuple d'offrir des sacrifices à Jupiter. Ceux qui refuseront seront passibles de la peine capitale. La jeune et noble chrétienne Theodora, comme les autres chrétiens, ne peut se résoudre à commettre un acte perçu comme un sacrilège. Mais, par respect pour ses convictions, elle refuse la fuite et affronte la mort aux côtés de Didymus, officier romain converti au christianisme.

William Christie enregistre pour la seconde fois cette oeuvre, déja parue sur support DVD avec une autre distribution [réf BH4476], dans un enregistrement de 1996.
