"Original soundtrack from James Serpento modern-day haunted house tale set in Villisca, Iowa, anchored in factual story of 1912 mass murders in same house. David James Nielsen scores for full orchestra with chorus but exercises restraint. Interestingly, while Nielsen pays tribute to ghostly genre, he creates haunting picture not with dissonance or creepy material but through lengthy, transparent lines, subtle shifts in harmonic vocabulary, sensitive scoring. Bright outbursts from full orchestra make appearance ("Dark Chase in the House") but Nielsen gives spotlight to reflective material that haunts, digs, slowly frightens from the inside. In balance are gentle - and beautiful - passages for harp, strings, solo flute. Highlights include rich, dramatic "June 10, 1912"; moving two-part "Finale" with warm French horn, trumpet passage in latter part. Adam Klemens conducts.
