"Mancini works his magic again, this time for Thom Eberhardt's Without a Clue, the underrated 1988 comedy starring Michael Caine as Sherlock Holmes and Ben Kingsley as Dr. Watson in a story that uses the mythology of Sherlock Holmes, but turns it completely on its head. In musical scope and tonality, Without a Clue falls somewhere inbetween Mancini's dramatic works and his comedies and he composes a flamboyant soundtrack that fits well into the movie's Victorian period. Eschewing the easy listening and often choral driven songs that popularised many of his scores of the 60s, Without a Clue is a thoroughly orchestral and dramatic work; Mancini plays straight man to Eberhardt's amusing movie, providing both dramatic tension, aggressive yet gentle melodies and a light classicism that gives the film a rich period tonality."
