SCRATCHIN' : PETE GUITAR LEWIS, JIMMY NOLEN, CAL GREEN
ANTHOLOGIES PAR INSTRUMENT: GUITAR

  • Ref. K 2455
  • CHARLY, 1991. Enregistrement 1952-1958.

"The Southern Western states of the Union, or more specifically those to the left of the Mississippi River bisection, have always enjoyed more musical sophistication than their neighbours on the opposite bank. Unsurprisingly, these states were also homes of the finest of the first black electric guitarists...or is it just coincidence that virtually all the founding fathers of electric guitar blues and jazz [Lonnie Johnson, T-Bone Walker, Eddie Durham, Oscar and Johnny Moore, and Charlie Christian] all came from the Louisiana-Texas-Oklahoma triad? Ever since, the blues emanating from these states have retained their sophisticated, jazzy overtones; even in the uncouth 1950s, as these sides by a son of Louisiana [Pete Lewis], Texas [Cal Green], and Oklahoma [Jimmy Nolen] demonstrate."
