KOTCHY

  • Ref. XK776O
  • CIVIL MUSIC, 2009.

Kotchy has so far in his career managed to sneak his way into the company of the Walkmen, Lady Sovereign and Girl Talk contributing to recordings by Yo Majesty's Shunda K and Tricky (contributing beats and vocals to 'Council Estate'). 89 is Kotchy's debut album, showcasing his talents as a one-man glitched-up R&B machine, singing, songwriting and producing his tracks with a crisp, digitised funk that's halfway between Jamie Lidell's electronic soul and the sort of Dabrye-influenced hip hop production we've come to know and love from likes of Bullion and Dorian Concept. Kotchy's take on this sound is generally more easy going than the main thread of that genre - something made inevitable once you throw his charmingly off-kilter whispered falsetto into the mix - but once in instrumental mode there's quite some weight behind these sample-hopping productions, with even a short interlude like 'Pay Me' delivering an abundance of warm, liquid low end and glitch-hop crunch.
