"Indie pop will never stop", criait-on à tue-tête sous les préaux punk au milieu des années 80. Les furies de 1977 depuis longtemps éteintes, l'esprit d'alors était à un do it yoursel fleur bleue, à la bubbelgum pop des 60's et à l'immaturité timidement portée en étendard. Titrée en clin d'oeil à la mythique C86, une compilation éditée en 1986 par l'hebdomadaire anglais NME, CD86 documente de façon étendue les premières heures de cette scène adepte de mélodies jingle jangle et de complaintes adolescentes. Difficilement récupérable par les majors et à l'exception des quelques échappées plus (Primal Scream, The Wedding Present) ou moins (The Darling Buds, The Soup Dragons) heureuses dans les charts, le gros du contingent indie préférera s'épanouir au creux d'un système économique autonome et confidentiel où s'épanouiront micro-labels, fanzines, mails orders gérés par quelques fans zélotes et flexi-discs. Un très beau témoignage d'un mouvement discret mais dont sont redevables plus d'un groupe d'aujourd'hui, de Belle And Sebastian à Peter, Bjorn And John." (JdN)
