"Compassion" (1993) is my attempt to combine everything with everything else, even the already combined. Just as in life everything is combined with everything else, new perceptions become combined with the compost heap already existing in our minds to create new substances or they catalyze already existing impressions which join to create something new, so this piece functions, & through these combinations creates a very low level of musical meaning, just of sufficient intensity to keep the piece from falling on the ground, just as life, through its mixing of meanings, also creates a very low but very continuous (life itself) intensity of continual meaning.
