"Hokane is the first in a series of "art & music" books to be released by Thrill Jockey that will "synthesize the acts of looking at art and listening to music in a way... that doesn't involve sitting in front of a computer". Accompanying music with visuals is hardly a revolutionary idea but, personally, I would have no problem with sitting in front of a computer screen if this meant that the music was accompanied by moving images rather than the static images in a book. The 48-page hardbound book that accompanies the CD contains drawings by Aki Tsuyuko; these are an apt accompaniment to the music as both have a particular naïve charm. However, the music retains its charm whereas¯for me¯that of the images paled sooner. Aki Tsuyuko plays organ and adds vocals to some pieces. Frequently, her organ music displays exactly the same blend of naiveté and charm as the late, great Moondog at his most childlike. Time and again the seeming simplicity of the music here is reminiscent of his use of simple, catchy melodies that evolve slowly if at all."
