En 1986 et sous l'impulsion de journalistes du NME et de Rough Trade Records, sort la compilation C86 ("C" comme dans cassette et "86" comme dans 1986), offerte avec le mag' anglais. A l'époque, des groupes comme Primal Scream, The Wedding Present, The Pastels ou The Soup Dragons sont encore de parfaits inconnus, bien loin de s'imaginer que l'objet va en quelques années être considéré comme l'un des mythes fondateurs de l'indie pop britannique et une grosse influence sur la vague shoegaze qui allait déferler.
