"Subtitled The Curious Universe Of Outsider Music, this audio set complements the book of the same name by Hoboken's Irwin Chusid, a WFMU DJ since 1975. The definition of "outsider" often includes a challenging perception of what's "in tune". Few of the performers sound like they are being deliberately odd: this is just their own un-affected means of artistic expression, technique supplanted by passion, intensity and general uniqueness. The Shaggs, The Legendary Stardust Cowboy and Tiny Tim offer up diverted pop styles that we've almost grown used to: indeed, it's during that crucial second airing of this disc that the hooks begin to bury deep. Highlights include an early Daniel Johnston demo (hammered organ as insistent percussion, warbly vocals delivering a compulsive melody), an excerpt from a 45-minute single take by human jukebox and Boston nursing home resident Jack Mudurian and BJ Snowden's skewed Canadian anthem. Also strangely attractive are the chicken-clucking, cat-strangled impressions of Lucia Pamela, the air saxophone jazz scatting of Shooby Taylor and oversized Chicagoan schizo Wesley Willis, comparing the merits of McDonald's and
