"Urdu literature, and the ghazal form (sets of rhyming couplets) in particular, flourished under the Moghul rule of India and was largely concerned with love, both earthly and mystical. In the 1930's and 40's struggle for independence, a new form of politicised poetry emerged, but it was still overwhelmingly dominated by male writers and male concerns. More recently, women have challenged not just the form but also the traditional content of Urdu literature. Some of those poets are represented here and can be found in "We Sinful Women", an anthology of Pakistani Women's feminist writing, edited and translated by Rukhsana Ahmad (The Women's Press, 1991).". "Just as Urdu was originally a hybrid growing out of Persian/Farsi, arabic and North Indian dialects, these songs blur the distinctions
