THE ROOTS OF DUBSTEP
ANTHOLOGIES GENERALES
- Ref. X 759L
- TEMPA RECORDINGS, 2006. Enregistrement 2000-2004.
"Directly descended from South London's garage and two-step scenes, it has parallels with the precision production ethics of drum'n'bass as well as revealing the pervasive influence of sound-system culture and pirate radio. It's an odd musical stepchild, with its awkward, cavernous, low-slung and heavily swung beats, behemoth basslines and shady atmospheres, but several new albums signal that representation beyond mixtapes and ripped radio sets is well overdue. The Roots of Dubstep fills in the gaps on the nascent years that begin with ex-drum'n'bass producer Steve Gurley's hypnotic, skippy two-step garage and El-B's amazing percussive rhythms before leading to the moody majesty of Digital Mystikz' first anthem "Pathwayz". In a complete reversal of dance-music tradition, as the template of dubstep begins to emerge, the tempo decreases, allowing the ghostly aspects of space within the music to creep in and eventually take over. Compiled with the benefit of hindsight, it's a step-by-step guide to a particular strand of unique UK dance music growing up in public."
