Enregistrées entre 1962 et 1964, les chansons sont au nombre de 47 et forment ainsi le "Bootleg Series Volume 9". À l'origine, ces morceaux issus des sessions de démo devaient servir à présenter les chansons de Dylan à d'autres musiciens pour d'éventuels spectacles ou des réenregistrements. Quelques-unes des chansons, telles "Rambling Gambling Willie"de Leeds, "Tambourine Man" et "Blowin' in the Wind" de Witmark, seront sorties ultérieurement par l"artiste américain mais dans des versions différentes.
