WAVES OF THE RANDOM SEA
NATURAL SNOW BUILDINGS

  • Ref. XN151E
  • BLACKEST RAINBOW, 2011.

Natural Snow Buildings are Mehdi Ameziane and Solange Gularte, a duo from France who make experimental psychedelic folk with elemental, raga-esque drones. They record individually as Twinsistermoon and Isengrind, respectively, but together they've amassed over 20 releases in the last 10 years, mostly small runs for labels such as Students Of Decay and Digitalis. This diverse suite for Blackest Rainbow involves woozy passages of string heavy drone but also more curious corners of psilocybic folk. The one track to really command our attention is 'This Ice Fortress', a whorl of razor-raga drones with a ritualistic breakdown like something from a Harrapian Night Recording track and a closing verse of fairy folk from the same secret glades as Paavoharju. Their longer drones tracks are expertly controlled, as with the pastoral, medieval-sounding 'Through The Branches In The Layer Of Fog' and the untethered head-trip of 'Drift The Water Soul', recalling the eternal ragas of the recent Barn Owl and Infinite Strings Ensemble album for Important.
