YOUNG GALAXY
- Ref. XY712A
- ARTS & CRAFTS, 2007. Enregistrement 2005-2006.
"When an atmospheric band finds their groove in mellow, spacious drones submerged in subtly casual hooks, the results can be highly addictive. Young Galaxy, the latest addition to the Arts&Crafts label, has this nonchalant charm, somewhere between quirky and beautiful. And maybe they come by it honestly. Stephen Ramsay (the male half of the duo) was touring as a member of Stars for a stint, but is adamant that Young Galaxy is not some side-project. One listen to Young Galaxy's debut assures you that these aren't b-side songs by any stretch. "Swing Your Heartache" is the lead-off track, and prehaps the quintessential song of the 11 here, with slow and hypnotic drums, atmospheric organs, sugary reverbed guitars, and lovely duel vocals. To overgeneralize, Young Galaxy play chilled space-pop that soothes and floats. Guitars pave the way for lofty vocals in "No Matter How Hard You Try". The chorus hook is sheer perfection as the band builds into an anthemic thunder. Catherine McCandless has these gorgeous and criminally understated vocals, and on "Outside The City", her reverbed lead is earnest and affecting. The pastoral drones of "Wailing Wall" precedes.é
